Center for Historical and Archaeological Studies of Crimea and the Mediterranean
The research work of the Center for Historical and Archaeological Research of Crimea and the Mediterranean at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences is aimed at developing the most pressing fundamental problems of Crimea and the Black Sea-Mediterranean region as a whole in the field of history, archeology, politics and economics. This work is especially relevant in the light of the current political situation in the region.
From Antiquity and the Middle Ages to the present day, Crimea has been a kind of meeting place for Western and Eastern civilizations. The cultural and national diversity of Crimea is due to the close intertwining of religions, customs and traditions of the peoples who inhabited the peninsula. Despite the difficult periods of the peninsula's history, all the peoples of Crimea are full members of the multinational family of the peoples of the Russian Federation.
Center pays special attention to the most important, breakthrough areas of scientific research, using interdisciplinary research methods, involving specialists in various fields of knowledge. Center carries out field and underwater archaeological research. The tasks of Center also include the coordination of fundamental and applied research, the development of the integration of science and education, and the involvement of young scientists in scientific research. The research results are tested at scientific conferences, seminars, and round tables. The results of the conducted research are published in monographs, articles, materials of scientific forums, as well as in the annual issue of a collection of scientific papers devoted to the national, cultural, and religious diversity of Crimea. An accompanying task of the center is educational activities, expressed in presentations of research results, in the organization and scientific support of joint exhibitions with museum and scientific institutions, and open lectures. All this contributes to the accumulation of scientific knowledge, cultural and spiritual development of the peoples of Crimea and the Black Sea region.
The main areas of work of Center are the following scientific topics:
- The development of political, commercial and cultural relations of Crimea with the states of the Mediterranean region and the countries of the East in Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Modern Times;
- Study of written sources on the history of Crimea and the Mediterranean region, historiography and cartography of the Black Sea and Mediterranean waters;
- Conducting archaeological and ethnographic research, studying the epigraphic material of the Crimea;
- Study of the ethnic history of Crimea and adjacent territories;
- Analysis of interethnic, religious, confessional and cultural relations of the peoples of Crimea, analysis of the current political, ethno-religious and economic situation around the Crimean Peninsula.
