The 3-rd INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE «TOWARDS THE RUSSIAN BUDDHIST CANON: TRANSLATION OF TEXT AS AN INTERCULTURAL DIALOGUE»
Will be held on November 13-14, 2024 at the Institute of Oriental Studies of Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, ul. Rozhdestvenka, 12.
Purpose: to develop methodological approaches to the creation of unified Buddhist lexicography and the formation of Buddhist canon in Russian language.
Objectives: to discuss the translation and application of Buddhist religious, cultural, ethical and philosophical concepts and terms, to increase public awareness of them, to acquire new knowledge and information through the exchange of experience, to present results of research and analysis in the form of recommendations, to develop interdisciplinary, inter-agency and international cooperation in the field of Buddhist Studies.
Special attention will be given to the Indo-Tibetan and Mongolian traditions of Buddhism historically present in Russia and adjacent countries.
Conference topic:
- Methodology of translation of Buddhist texts and hermeneutic problems;
- Practice of translating Buddhist text from Sanskrit, Pali, Chinese, Tibetan, Mongolian into Russian and other European languages;
- Terminology of different traditions and schools of Buddhism;
- Terminology of basic and secondary fields of Buddhist knowledge (Tib. rigs gnas che ba lnga – art, medicine, linguistics, logic, philosophy of Buddhism; rig gnas chung ba lnga – poetics, metrics, lexicography, drama, astrology) and their transmission into Russian and other European languages;
- Canonized lexicography of Buddhist dictionaries «Mahaviutpatti», «The Source of Sages» and others;
- Analytical studies of published translations of Buddhist texts: approaches and terminology.
We invite researchers of Buddhist culture, scientists, Buddhist clergy, translators of Buddhist texts cooperating with publishing houses and Buddhist organizations, simultaneous interpreters, working with Buddhist masters.
Format of the conference: in person and online.
Forms of participation (in person or online): oral presentation, audio-video presentation, observer.
