On April 16, a delegation from CSAI IOS RAS took part in a roundtable discussion titled “VUCA – Peace and the Scramble for Resources: Case Studies from Russia, the United States, and Ukraine”, held at St. Petersburg State University (SPbU). The event was organized by the SPbU G.O.R.K.I. Center, chaired by Karin Kneissl, former Foreign Minister of Austria.

Presentations were delivered by: Dr. N. Plotnikov, Head of CSAI IOS RAS (Doctor of Political Science); Dr. S. Tkachenko, Professor of European Studies at SPbU (Doctor of Economics); V. Khaykov, Chairman of the Board of the National Association of Oil and Gas Service; Dr. I. Pyagai, Research Director of the Scientific Center for Mineral and Technogenic Resources Processing at St. Petersburg Mining University (Doctor of Technical Sciences); E. Golovina, Deputy Head of the Department of Sectoral Economics at St. Petersburg Mining University (PhD in Economics).

Experts addressed pressing issues tied to growing global competition for natural resources and explored potential cooperation between Russia and the US in mining and processing rare earth metals and other mineral resources.

The discussion facilitated a productive exchange of insights, assessments, and forecasts across a broad range of topics. Graduate and undergraduate students from SPbU and St. Petersburg Mining University, along with visiting international experts, actively engaged in the dialogue.

The roundtable, representing academia from Russia’s two capitals, developed concrete recommendations for federal authorities to implement in practice.
