On the 11th of October, 2022 the Eastern Cultural Center (the Russian Academy of Sciences), with the financial support of the Foundation “Motherland History”, opened the exhibition “Ottoman Manuscripts from Bulgaria in Russian Collections. To the 145th Anniversary of Liberation War Commencement in the Balkans (1877)”.

The exposition introduced viewers to the richest Ottoman manuscript heritage - manuscripts of the 17th-19th centuries in Arabic and Turkish from Bulgarian cities saved during the wars of the years 1828–1829 and 1877–1878.

The Russian military preserved in museums and libraries the Ottoman manuscripts collections in Moscow, St. Petersburg, Ivanovo and Yalta. Most of these manuscripts came to Russia during the Russian-Turkish wars of 1828-1829 and 1877-1878 after the occupation of Bulgarian cities by the Russian troops.

The Russian Military Command did everything necessary to save and further protect the Ottoman libraries in Bulgaria. Nevertheless, a significant part of the manuscripts had perished irretrievably.

The rescued manuscripts were moved to Russia. They are the priceless monuments of Islam written culture in the Bulgarian lands.  They give us unique information on its history.

The exhibition is dedicated to the 145th anniversary of Liberation War Commencement in the Balkans (1877).

The opening of the exhibition was attended by representatives of museums and libraries that provided manuscripts, the Spiritual Spiritual Administration of the Russian Federation, the embassy of Palestine, researchers of the Institute of Oriental Studies and the press.

The exhibition is open from the 10th of October, 2022 till the 10th of November 2022 at the address: Moscow, st. Rozhdestvenka, 12, Eastern Cultural Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
