The 2nd Annual Conference “Archaeology of the Ancient Orient”

We are pleased to announce that the 2nd annual conference “Archaeology of the Ancient Orient” will be held at the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences on March 31 – April 1, 2022 (Thursday-Friday).

We invite abstract submissions from researchers who work at archaeological sites in the Nile Valley, Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Iran, Central Asia, and the Levant or interpret archaeological material from these regions.

Our goal is to bring together specialists from different interconnected fields and regions stimulating the exchange of information on recent works and best field practices as well as discussions on theoretical and methodological issues.

Themes:

  • Current archaeological works and new discoveries.
  • Innovative practices and excavation techniques.
  • New and traditional approaches to the study of material culture.
  • Interdisciplinary projects in archaeology.
  • Theoretical and methodological discussions.
  • Archaeological finds in museum collections.
  • Experimental archaeology.
  • Landscape archaeology, geoarchaeology, GIS.

Proposals from early career researchers involved into archaeological projects in the above-mentioned regions are particularly welcomed.

Presentations should take the form of a 30-minute paper.

We aim to deliver the conference as a ‘hybrid’ event (with attendees joining both online (via Zoom) and in-person). For any applicants (particularly international) unable to attend the conference, we are willing to arrange video presentations (e.g. a recorded talk or audio recorded over PowerPoint).

Abstracts (maximum of 300 words) must be submitted by 7th March 2022 to:

Dr. Archil S. Balakhvantsev: balakhvantsev@gmail.com (Mesopotamia, Anatolia, Iran, Central Asia)

Dr. Maksim Lebedev: maksim_lebedev@yahoo.com (Nile Valley and the Levant)

Confirmation of the decision of the conference committee will be emailed by 14th March 2022.

Sincerely Yours, Organizing Committee
